Plays are (like books) self-contained works that are complete in and of themselves -- therefore, the titles of plays will be italicized in your citations and in your text.

e.g.,

Superstitious actors refer to "the Scottish play" rather than say the title Macbeth, but it's "safe" to refer to Macbeth the character by name. 

In my English class, we read the play The Doll's House.
