When writing in MLA, APA, or Chicago styles, you will italicize the formal titles of artworks (paintings, photographs, illustrations, etc.).

AP Style (used by newspapers, commonly) uses quotations, so you will commonly see that done in non-academic writing.

(If a work doesn't have a formal title and you're writing in a short description as a placeholder, you will neither italicize nor put quote marks around that description.)
